      DR. FREDERICK W. MUNSON
Dr. Frederick W. Munson, 91, of Pleasant Hill, a longtime area physician and surgeon, passed away Sept. 23, 2000, at Wharton Nursing Home. A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Community Church, with the Rev. Ed Schneider officiating.
Dr. Munson was born Jan. 17, 1909, in Streator, IL, the son of Frederick L. and Beatrice Roberts Munson.
He attended Streator area schools and received bachelor's and medical degrees from Northwestern University and its medical school in Evanston, IL, before entering medical practice in Streator in the early 1930s. On June 30, 1936, he married Helen Lohela, a Streator school teacher.
During World War II, Dr. Munson served in England and France as a U.S. Army physican, and after the war entered medical practice in Chicago, where he served a surgical residency at Wesley Memorial Hospital and later joined the faculty of Northwestern Medical School. During the 1960s, Dr. and Mrs. Munson served as missionaries in India under the Board of World Ministries of the United Church of Christ, primarily at the Christian Mission Hospital in Madurai, South India.
In 1968, the couple settled in Pleasant Hill, and for more than two decades Dr. Munson was on the medical staffs of the Cumberland Medical Center and the Cumberland Clinic in Crossville. He also served as an attending physician at the Wharton Nursing Home, and was active in the church and community.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Munson, a resident of Wharton Nursing Home; two sons, William Munson of Huntsville, AL, and John Munson of Calumet, MI; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a special memorial fund established at Uplands Retirement Village, P.O. Box 168, Pleasant Hill, TN 38578.
